Triquetra

A symbol with different interpretations. A symbol also misunderstood by many, as is the case with most symbols. The word triquetra is a Latin word derived from the Latin “tri” (three) and “quetrus” (cornered). Its first name was simply "triangle" and was used to refer to various shapes with three corners.

It was originally used as a pagan religious symbol of Celtic Trinacria paganism and is still used today by neo-pagans – especially Wiccans. It was even appropriated by the Christian church about a millennium ago and today it is even characterized as an early Christian symbol.
Like the triskelion, this Celtic symbol embodies the sacred number 3, representing the three phases of the Goddess and the three elements of nature. During early Christianity the Triquetra acquired an additional symbolism, as that of the holy trinity.
